Vanderbilt University–New York City Policies
All policies outlined in the Vanderbilt Student Handbook apply to students studying at Vanderbilt University-New York City campus unless altered or superseded by a specific policy included in this addendum. The University has also promulgated the following additional policies specific to the Vanderbilt NYC campus.
Noise
Quiet hours in outdoor spaces shared by the neighboring hotel and condominiums start at 10 pm Eastern and end at 7 am Eastern. Excessive or amplified noise during quiet hours is not allowed.
Alcohol in Outdoor Spaces
Open containers of alcohol or common sources of alcohol (e.g. kegs) are not allowed in the outdoor spaces shared by the neighboring hotel and condominiums regardless of age except as part of an approved event by the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives in New York City or designee. All events with alcohol must comply with New York’s state and local law and require a permit from the New York State Liquor Authority.
Smoking, Vaping, and Cannabis
Students are not permitted to smoke, including through the use of e-cigarettes and vapes, on the Vanderbilt NYC campus. This includes any indoor space, the outdoor space shared by the neighboring hotel and condominiums, or within 20 feet of the entrance(s) to the shared Vanderbilt spaces.
Students may possess tobacco, vapes, or other tobacco-smoking products on the Vanderbilt NYC campus, subject to applicable laws and University policies. Vanderbilt students may not possess marijuana, THC, or other adult-use cannabis products on the Vanderbilt NYC campus.
Shipping of Prohibited Items
Prohibited items, including those outlined in the Fire Safety section, that are shipped to the NYC campus will not be received and, instead, will either be returned to sender or confiscated. Prohibited items include, but not limited to, mini-fridges or other appliances that would overload the electrical system, weapons, and battery powered scooters, bicycles, or other mobility devices that pose a fire risk, unless authorized as part of an approved accommodation.
Fire Safety
Use or storage of any charcoal or propane grill on any balcony, rooftop, patio, or courtyard on campus is prohibited.
Additionally, all lithium-ion batteries and electronic mobility devices kept outdoors must strictly comply with New York state and local safety standards, which prohibit non-UL-certified battery packs and require official red safety tags on all device charging cords.
Finally, local fire code limits decorations on the exterior of room doors to a maximum of 10% of the door's total surface area, and all decorative items must consist entirely of certified flame-retardant or non-combustible materials.
To reduce fire risks from electrical overloads, the following items are prohibited, except for those provided by the university: refrigerators, microwaves, toasters, toaster ovens, rice cookers, Keurig coffee makers, electric kettles, and other appliances.
Violations of these fire safety requirements may result in disciplinary action, including escalated sanctions when warranted by the severity of the violation, repeated violations, or the risk posed to the safety of the community.
Events
For Vanderbilt NYC, the University also needs a Temporary Place of Assembly Permit from the NYC Department of Buildings for an indoor event with 75+ attendees or an outdoor event with 200+ attendees.
Vaccination Requirement
The State of New York also requires certain immunizations and communicable disease compliance measures for students attending postsecondary institutions. Specifically, New York requires students attending postsecondary institutions to demonstrate immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella, and to comply with applicable meningococcal disease information and vaccination requirements. Solicitation for Credit Cards
At Vanderbilt NYC, the advertising, marketing, or merchandising of credit cards to students on campus is prohibited without prior approval by the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives in New York City.
Student Interest Groups
Vanderbilt NYC Student Interest Groups are informal, student-led groups that provide opportunities for community building and engagement around shared interests on the Vanderbilt NYC campus. To be recognized, Student Interest Groups must register with Vanderbilt NYC Student Affairs through the designated registration process, maintain at least four currently enrolled Vanderbilt NYC student members, designate a primary student contact, and agree to comply with all applicable university policies, including the University's Non-discrimination Policy. Recognized Student Interest Groups may use designated campus space, subject to availability and applicable university policies. Student Interest Groups are not Registered Student Organizations and are not eligible for university funding unless otherwise authorized.
