To help maintain a safe environment, students may not tamper with, damage, disable, misuse, or otherwise interfere with life-safety or security equipment and systems. Prohibited conduct includes, but is not limited to, improper use of emergency exits; propping open secured doors; activating alarms when no emergency exists; tampering with building access systems, smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, or surveillance equipment; or damaging safety equipment through misuse or horseplay.
Safety expectations also apply within and around residential and University facilities. Fire hazards and other prohibited items—including, but not limited to, candles, paint, flammable liquids, electric scooters or other personal electric mobility devices, skateboards, and similar items—may not be brought into or stored within buildings. Fireworks are not allowed anywhere on campus except during official University events and activities with appropriate safety measures in place. Additional information regarding prohibited items in residential communities can be found in the Residential Life section of the Student Handbook.
